Snow plow and train collide

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 2:14 p.m. a Minnesota Department of Transportation Single Axle Plow Truck (2007 Sterling) was struck by a Union Pacific Train. The MNDOT Truck was southbound on Highway 22 when struck by the east bound train. The train tracks cross Highway 22 in the City of Kiester; the closest intersection is West Front Street.
The MNDOT Truck was hit on the passenger's side, the train approximately centered on the passenger compartment, and pushed approximately a mile down the track. The driver was plowing Highway 22 at the time of the crash, other factors as to the cause of the crash are under investigation at this time.
The MNDOT Plow Driver is a 21 year employee. The driver was unconscious immediately following the crash, but had regained consciousness before being airlifted by MAYO to St. Mary's/Rochester. Driver has been admitted to ICU and is conscious and talking. Driver was wearing lap and shoulder belt at time of crash.
The train crossing is marked by lights and an audible signal. Kiester is approximately 5 miles north of the MN/Iowa border between Albert Lea and Blue Earth.
The lights at the train tracks were knocked out from the crash and MNDOT has put up temporary stop signs.
